Submission Guidelines

All pieces must be written in an article format. This includes an abstract (no longer than 200 words), acknowledgements, a clear and logical argument, and a conclusion.

Articles can either be previous assessed essays, turned into submissions with the above features, or can be original research undertaken outside of your modules at Southampton. There should be no essay question, but instead an article title. In this way, previous essays can easily be adapted into submission pieces. Students can submit a maximum of two articles.

Articles must be between 1,800- 4,400 words. This does not include footnotes or a bibliography. Footnoting must be extensive and work that breaches Academic Integrity will not be accepted. Copyright-free images are accepted and will be produced in colour. Articles must be non-fiction.

Please fill out and attach the disclaimer form (below) with your article and send your submission to cb1n20@soton.ac.uk, with the subject ‘Journal Submission’ and your name.

We will also be hosting an in-person/online ‘Journal in a Day’ workshop in March to help students convert essays into journal articles. More details on this to follow.

Marking

All pieces will be anonymised by the Editor-in-Chief, and then passed onto the relevant Student Marker. Articles are judged according to four marking criteria: strength of argument, knowledge of the scholarly field and originality, clarity and writing, and presentation. Feedback is available for all articles submitted and you will be notified of the outcome in June.

Submissions for articles are now open, and will close on 25th April 2025. Good luck!

If you have any further questions, please email cb1n20@soton.ac.uk.
